Winter turning into spring slooowly

Hey there! What's up?

I think I just woke up from hibernation. As you might have an idea, it's really dark in Finland in the winter. The sky is pitch black most of the day and night, and when it's 'light' it's still not very bright outside. You might not see the sun in ages because the sky is usually cloudy. So what you see is: everything dark in the morning when you wake up, around noon behind the light gray clouds in the sky a weird spot of light remotely resembling something you remember being called the sun, in the afternoon dark again, and in the evening - well - you can guess.

So I consider it well justified to blame the nature for my lack of energy and enthusiasm.

But now it all has changed! As we roam this northern land in the darkness, day starts slowly sneaking back into our lives and gets longer bit by bit every day. You might not see the gradual change, but suddenly it hits you! It's already light before 8 in the morning! And today I realized it was still not pitch black at 7 pm!

Soon it will be light all the time. But that is what I need. And I'm glad I'm getting it! :D

December

Hi friends! Helsinki is covered with snow. There are massive piles of snow around every corner and on the ground lies a nearly meter high layer if snow. Sure the traffic is in trouble and so on, but the scene is just amazing. The world is sleeping under the white, heavy snow, wafting from the quiet night sky as tiny pearly flakes. Since we're so north it's pretty dark this time of the year. I mean it's dark most of the day, and when it's 'light' it's not very bright, just a dim shade of sunshine from behing the clouds. I'm used to it. But this place really is at the end of the world.

I don't know if anything in life goes as planned. You never know what will happen. And that is quite the point of it. What I've learned is that most of the time your expectations are wrong, and the ideas you have for what your future might look like will remain as frames in your imagination. But what actually takes place in our lives might be something greater we've ever dared to dream. Or not necessarily greater though. Lovelier, more exciting, even horrifying. But different. And what I believe we should do is to dare to take a leap towards the unknown, to dare to ride the waves washing over our lives, knowing we have no idea where we might end up.

Thank you for reading my blog, it does mean a lot to me. :)

Monster Ball

Yo folks! Sorry for abandoning my blogger's career for a moment and keeping all the cool news to myself. Will fix that now.

Before I get to this fall's highlight which I talked about in my last post, I want to quickly tell you about the night before hitting the airport and one of the coastal hot spots on our planet. Just hours before going to the airport I was on Lady Gaga's concert on her Monster Ball world tour.

Baby! I love Lady Gaga! And when the day before the concert my friend Liisa told me that she had gotten tickets for us, I was jumping up and down in the air, screaming and laughing. So was she. ;) Liisa told me that she had had to go out and run around the house a couple of times.

We were excited. Liisa came to my place, we had pizza, chose our outfits and did our make-up. I wore leopard-pattern leggings on top of which I had a body (you know, this tight swimsuit looking piece of clothing they used to wear in aerobics in the beginning of 90's) and boots. My make-up was from Lady Gaga's video "Telephone" and Liisa's make-up from the video "Paparazzi". And Liisa had on a ring similar to what Lady Gaga has worn. Details! Hahaha... :P

Not too many people at the concert had gone wild like us though. In the beginning I might have felt slightly overdressed, but after the concert... well... I was wearing the-coolest-fucking-clothes-EVER-at-that-moment. :)

But I was definitely owned by Stefani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga, the star of the night outweighing every single outfit at the arena. Her outfits were just wicked.

Lady Gaga was really cool. I loved it how she was present on the stage and put effort into making every single listener feel part of her show.

RAW-RAW-RA-AH-AH, ROMMA-ROMMAMMAAH, GA-GA OOH-LA-LAAH, WANT YOUR BAD ROMANCE!

Thank you all for visiting my blog, I means a lot to me. :)

Back in Helsinki

Yo! Sorry for not writing in a while, I've been re-adjusting to living in Finland. Though, there's not that much to adjust myself into, which makes it stupid that after a month I'm still generally confused about everything. Well. Almost everything in my life has changed, so I don't blame myself for being 'inefficient in adjusting into change in life situation'. Over these past couple of years I've gained some experience in this and I know that your new life in a new place doesn't always start overnight without efforts. You need to find your style of life and everything around that. But enough of wrist slitting here.

I like being back here. As I said, much has changed in my life, but the most important has remained - my friends are still here.

And it's good to be back Helsinki. As many of my fellow town dwellers do, I love Helsinki. This is a city with strong identity and nice atmosphere, and one of the things that make this place really cool is the fact that, I'd dare to say, most of the people really like to live here. It's not a place which people dreamed getting out of. It feels like home here.

Here are some pics from Suomenlinna. It's an island part of Helsinki.

Estonia

Where am I from? I'm from Estonia. My parents are Estonian, their parents and grand parents, and so on, were Estonian. So, so was I born Estonian in the year 1987. I lived my first years in Tallinn. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union a job opportunity in Finland opened up for my father. My parents decided to move to Finland. And we moved into a town on the west coast, called Rauma, the third oldest city in Finland founded in 1442. There I grew up, surrounded by culture and history.

As a little child I learned the language in an instant, and I never really felt anyhow less capable at functioning in the Finnish culture as any other kids. Nevertheless I did live in a fully bilingual and bi-cultural surrounding. My home and my family were Estonian, and everything else - school, friends, hobbies, culture - was Finnish. Looking back at it I'd say it was the highest form of integration: belonging to the new culture and keeping, not forgetting the old culture. Though it should be noted that Finnish and Estonian cultures don't clash that easily.

When I was little, we used to spend our summer and winter vacations in Estonia, visiting our relatives. However when I grew older, my parents didn't drag me with them anymore. Therefore I didn't visit Estonia that often anymore. And if I did visit it, it was with my Finnish friends, as tourists. Because of that, I kind of grew apart from the place where I was from. I sort of forgot what it was like, how it was over there and how it felt to be part of it. I didn't feel like part of it anymore. I felt like it was a culture and a place I didn't belong in anymore. I'm not joking, I kind of felt I wasn't welcome there as a common Estonian anymore.

Therefore I considered myself Finnish, nothing else. But I went to Estonia this summer. I was coming from Prague and Berlin, alone, without a permanent address, only with my backpack. And it changed it all.

I went to my mum's place in Southeast Estonia. She had moved to the countryside. There I lived without a need to know what time it was nor what day it was. Simple. Stress free. Altogether a very lovely way of being. We drove to different cities and places, met family and friends. And in the middle of this I, in a rather romantic way, started developing my national identity as Estonian.

I speak the language! I know how to act in the culture! I know how to behave in social situations! I am a fucking citizen of the country! Why would I ever think I wasn't welcome there??

I have to say, that... I'm happy. I'm very, very happy that I realized and experienced this. I still consider myself Finnish. But now I also consider myself Estonian. I know, it's complicated. But that's often the case with life. Things are not black and white. I don't feel like I wasn't complete or have less than others. I feel like I've been given more.

There are lots of people like me in the world. People, who cannot quite answer where they're from. But that doesn't have to be a weakness. I wish you'd all enjoy the best parts of the life you've been given.

Life is good. :)

Summer, oh summer

Summer. As you might have noticed, I love summer. (Not that I wouldn't love other seasons...) And last summer was one of the best summers in my life. I know, I'm young and I have everything yet to come, but I'm sure I will remember this summer as the summer of no worries, no boundaries and lots of good times and happiness.

Here are some frames about what my summer was like when I was in Finland.

Going, going, going!

It was bye bye Helsinki before, but now I’m leaving Finland. Snowy, snowy Finland...

On a walk with Donna.

A bit of snow on the rooftop. (A view ”out” of the corridor window.)

Enough about Finland though. I’m excited about going to Prague. It was actually pretty good that I had this extra time to get everything prepared. If I had left already last week, I would have been in a really big hurry. But now it’s pretty much all good!

- Flight ticket: check.
- Travel insurance: check.
- All the paperwork with my university, Kela and and other institutes: check.
- 25 kg of clothes, shoes and other things stuffed into my backpack and my handbag: check baby! (it was a mission almost impossible once again)
- Good travel spirit: check :)
- Apartment: I have agreed on several meetings on Thursday where I go to see rooms for rent. It seems pretty good. :)

So my plan in Prague is this: find an apartment, get to know the city, get to know nice people, start working on Monday at 8.45. Wohoo, exciting! :D

P.S. Until here I wrote already yesterday, but now I’m at the airport and really getting that I’m going, going, going! :D Oh yeah, wish me luck!

Vanhojen Tanssit

Vanhojen Tanssit is a traditional Finnish high school ball in which the high school second graders celebrate becoming the oldest in the school (after the oldest class withdraws to study for the final exam). In practice it means that they practice traditional ball dances and perform them to other students, parents and families.

My little brother is graduating this year (they grow so fast!), but his girlfriend had the ball this year. So he actually skipped his own to dance with his girlfriend now. They were a handsome couple :)

I watched the ball with my cute little sister.

In the end the dancers could ask their relatives or friends to dance Waltz with them, so I got to dance with the most handsome guy there. ;)

Goodbye Helsinki

Helsinki is my favorite city in Finland. I love the parks, trams, and the atmosphere, but most of all I love all my friends there and the way my life is in there. Actually I was just getting used to living back there, just when I’m leaving again! I’m of course very happy and excited about the fact that I’m going to move to Prague for the spring and the summer :) but it was a little bit sad moment (well, just a little bit) when I left my apartment to which I’m not going to return anymore.

There it is, in a student building. Probably the right time to leave.

And the neighborhood... well, I’m happy I had an excuse to leave that! :) This is one example of the place: I lived right next to the train station, and one night in the early 2008 someone had thrown up quite a big load of vomit in the station. Well, it took them (I don’t know who’s responsible for keeping the stations clean. VR, the train company probably) a while to arrive to the scene and clean up the mess, but they didn’t really do a good work that day nor on any other day after that.

Ladies and gentlemen. It is fucking 2010, and the dried up vomit is still in the Pohjois-Haaga train station! Seriously, whatta hell??

Yes honey, puke. When I go back to Helsinki, I will find a better place!

Go Viivi!

My friend is in the Miss Suomi beauty contest!
Vote for her: number 2, Viivi Suominen! Why? Because she's pretty, dah! :) And, she's down-to-earth, kind, smart and funny.

Hot!

Viivi's a great gal indeed. Finland: if you want to represented by a beautiful, smart and friendly young woman who knows who she is and what she wants, vote for Viivi S, number 2! :)

P.S. The contest is this Sunday, so thumbs up!

Frost

Yeah, I know, yesterday I wrote a post about exactly the same thing... But I just can't get enough! :D It's so incredibly beautiful outside!

So, again today I went out to take pictures. Today everything was covered with frost. It's like there's a sugar glazing all over this land.

Amazing sunlight.

Winter wonderland

Here in Helsinki we're having the most snow since the 60's. And I'm loving it! Usually winters here in southern Finland are an annoying mixture of cold wind, rain, wet snow, ice and slush. But now we're living in a winter wonderland! :) I went for a walk to the nearby woods and took pictures.

And me in the snow.

Apart from admiring the nature, I have been searching, searching and still searching for the internship. But there might be something for me now, so let's see. ;)

So many goodbyes

This fall I was a lot with exchange students, because we had the same courses. And the thing with the exchange students of course is that they at one point go back home. It was today.

We went to take Edi to the bus. We had coffee together and also said goodbye to the people we don't see here anymore.

Masha, Christian, Joshi, me, Sergio, Edi and his at least 30 kilos of luggage. ;)

Edi wanted to have his last coffee and donuts at Arnolds.

Bye, bye... Hope to see you all again soon! :)
